The Difference between Microsoft Publisher Student and Full Editions
February 1, 2011

Price is the only difference between Microsoft Publisher Student and Full editions, and the lower price is only available to verified students, teachers, and institutions. Available as an optional part of the Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010 software suite, Publisher comes as a fully functional copy with all of the same features and commands available from the full retail package, just like the other programs in the suite. The license requirements for the student edition require proof of student status or affiliation with an approved educational institution, which is normally satisfied by submitting an email address which ends with .edu.
Microsoft offers significant discounts to the retail price of Publisher and many other software products for qualifying individuals and institutions. In each case the software is the exact same program without any modifications at all, and all functions work. There are some limits as to the quantity of licenses that can be bought by individual students or teachers, and some differences in the terms of the license regarding commercial use, but there are no differences in the actual program that gets installed.

Microsoft Publisher 2010 edition is the latest in a long line of desktop publishing programs sharing the same name. With Microsoft Publisher it is easy to create websites, fliers, business cards, calendars, and much more from templates, existing publications, or from scratch. Several common file formats can be opened from within Publisher. Output can be in the form of a printed final product, a file suitable for commercial printer production, or an electronic version designed for email or the web.

The educational version of Publisher comes with a perpetual license, which means that once the product license has been activated it will never expire. This is the same policy used by Microsoft on most of their other software, retail or student edition, but it is not a universal policy among software vendors. For instance AutoDesk, the makers of AutoCAD, offers a free one year license for students to use their software, after which the software will not run without purchasing a license.

Microsoft Publisher is available in full, upgrade, and student editions, each of which operates exactly the same. Microsoft also offers a variety of other discounted or free software to students and teachers in accredited educational institutions. Microsoft's DreamSpark program offers a variety of software including servers, programming and development languages, and other popular products free of charge to qualifying students. All of these programs offer the same features as the more expensive retail versions.

Microsoft offers students great discounts on a variety of products through the Microsoft Store. Take a look at some of these other great programs and the low cost of ownership for software that can last for years, providing productivity long after the school work is done!
