Hard Disk to Hard Disk Data Transfer in Windows
by Norm Dickinson Published 3/30/2011

Data transfer from hard disk to hard disk can be performed on individual files, folders or entire drives for a fast and easy data backup. Hard drive data transfers offer speed and stability whether upgrading to a new hard drive or performing a backup of critical data. Simply copy and paste files or folders from one drive to another for basic data transfers, or duplicate entire drives using specialized hard drive utility software designed for the purpose.

Copy and Paste Files and Folders

Step 1

Launch Windows Explorer and navigate to the location which contains the files or folders that are to be copied.

Step 2

Click once on the first file or folder to be copied and then hold down the "Shift" key and click on the last file or folder to be copied to select a series of files or folders. Alternately hold down the "CTRL" key instead of the "Shift" key and click on individual files or folders to select them.

Step 3

Right-click on one of the selected files and choose "Copy" from the context menu.

Step 4

Navigate to the destination drive and folder.

Step 5

Right-click in the white space in the window away from any file or folder names and click "Paste" from the context menu.

Step 6

Click "Keep Both Files" if unsure about any duplicate files, or choose to overwrite or skip file copying for any files or folders that have matching names in the destination folder.

Hard Drive Cloning

Step 1

Download and install one of the hard drive cloning software packages (See Resources).

Step 2

Launch the hard drive cloning software.

Step 3

Click on the source drive to be copied from, typically drive "C," from the list of available drives. Click "Next."

Step 4

Click on the destination drive where the data will be transferred to, typically drive "E" or "F." Click "Next."

Step 5

Select any advanced options required and then click "Begin" to begin the cloning operation.

Step 6

Allow the computer to restart and to complete the cloning operation.

Step 7

Power down the computer and remove the destination drive.

·    Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need

·    Second hard drive installed

·    Hard drive duplication software (optional)

·    Hard drive cloning utilities allow a hard drive to be copied sector by sector in order to upgrade the hard drive in a computer without having to reinstall the operating system or software. Clone the existing hard drive to a new larger hard drive and replace the original drive with the new drive when the operation is complete for an easy upgrade.

·    Never overwrite files unless sure about which version to keep. It is much safer to keep both copies and evaluate them later in most cases. Cloning from one hard drive to another will completely erase the destination drive and all files or folders on it.
